Chasing Happiness

I will be happy when I finish this degree
I will be happy when I complete my Honors degree
I will be happy when I complete my Master’s degree
I will be happy when I get my first job
I will be happy when I get a permanent job
I will be happy when I buy my first home

All those were my excuses as to why I couldn’t allow myself to be happy.

For some reason I always thought I needed to do something to earn the right to be happy. Who was I to be happy when I didn’t even have this or that. Mind you these “things” I told myself I needed to have were all material things. It was like I was on a bicycle with happiness in front of me but I had to paddle very hard to catch it. Boy was it exhausting to a point that I almost had a break down. The warning signs were there for so long but I ignored them.
I have learned and I am still learning that you can never chase happiness. You can’t think by having certain items they will guarantee that you will be happy as well.
Happiness is already in me, I have just covered it with so many excuses as to why I didn’t deserve to have it.

Happiness is not a distant place that one has to travel to. It can happen now, it is freely available to everyone. Reclaim your happiness. The Dalai Lama puts it perfectly: “Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.”

Great post. You should have a listen to Abraham-Hicks on YouTube…or check out their books…
