​What I learned from my first big sale

Early last year I realized a need to supply packaging in Namibia after searching locally for suppliers who sell a particular box I needed but couldn’t find. I have no business background and the closest I came to selling products was when I sold flavoured popcorns at my primary school’s Enterprenuership Day about 20 years ago. 

Sales has never been my strong point and the fact that I am an introvert puts me at a further disadvantage but I have decided to risk it and go for it. The planning process has been excited and I was happy to get my first big order recently. All the excitement quickly disappeared as I found myself blank and having to do multiple stuff that I wish I could delegate to others instead of doing it myself.  This was quite stressful becuase different things kept popping up that I never thought of during my planning process.

Here are five lessons I learned from my first big order:

  • Honesty is key.
  • Ask for help when you need it.
  • Follow up, follow up, follow up.
  • Forsee problems and have a mitigation plan. 
  • Be courageous, things might go wrong but it is an opportunity to do better next time. If you know better, you do better.
